During staff shortages and as determined necessary for minimal coverage, this position will require coverage on 1s, 2nd and 3rd shift.
Per G.S. 126-5(cl) (37), this position is Exempt from all provisions of NC General Statute Chapter 126 (State Human Resources Act) with the exception of Articles 6 and 7.

Responsibilities
The Professional Nurse will help plan, implement, and oversee all aspects of nursing services rendered to a specified caseload of mildly to profoundly mentally retarded individuals with varying degrees of physical impairments. Using guidelines set forth by Caswell Developmental medical/nursing services policies, and the NC Nurse Practice Act, the professional nurse is responsible for maintaining coordination and accountability of quality nursing care delivered by Licensed Practical Nurses in conjunction with the Nurse Supervisor. The Professional Nurse acts as consultant to unit staff and other disciplines for the improvement of basic care as dictated by the individual’s needs. Job responsibilities also include:
- Maintains optimum level of individuals’ health by making daily nursing assessments, intervening as necessary, and improving basic care through suggestions/use of general nursing measures as directed by NC Nurse Practice Act, Nursing Services Manual, or by referral to Medical Provider or other appropriate discipline.
- Functions as member of interdisciplinary team by writing evaluations, assessing/analyzing problems that may impact on individual’s habilitation, and by making recommendations that may lessen or prevent the impact.
- Attends annual habilitation meetings on assigned individuals or assigns an LPN to attend as necessary in the absence of the Professional Nurse.
- Develops and/or assist others in developing and implementing objective plans as assigned by the team. Documents objective progress as specified by the objective plan.
- Responsible and accountable for accidents that occur under their supervision in their area, enforcing all safety procedures, investigating accidents, self-inspections, individual and employee training, promoting safe work habits and practices.
- Assists Medical Provider in daily rounds and physical examinations and ensures orders are transcribed, and assures that referrals are promply referred to x-ray, lab, or OPC for scheduling.
- Performs quarterly nursing assessments or reviews/countersigns those that may be assigned to LPNs.
- Completes Medicaid forms as needed.
- Investigates medical concerns about individuals generated by all disciplines, assesses the situations, makes a nursing diagnosis, and determines and initiates necessary action.
- Provides formal/informal teaching to home staff and individuals as the need arises to improve the quality of health care.
- Contacts families/guardians as deemed necessary by and for the medical provider and facility policy to relay information regarding accidents, illness, or treatment and/or to obtain consent for treatments/medications.
- Ensures continuity of care throughout hospitalizations in Delta/Acute by relaying information pertaining to individuals as needed.
- Participates in court competency hearings or court guardian appointments on assigned caseload along with other team members.
- Accompanies individuals to medical clinics/consultations on and off campus as assigned. Attends field trips as scheduled by the Nurse Supervisor and ensures necessary arrangements for medication are made.
- Follows Caswell Developmental Center’s Policy related to psychoactive medications (AIMS, consents, consultations, Medication History Flow Sheet preparation, TIRC/HRAC reviews, lab protocols, BIPRs and internal notification requirements regarding drug starts, stops, and changes).
- Performs body checks of individuals for home visits, transfers, etc.
- Checks dispensed medication for accuracy and explains medication usage and directions to family.
- Oversees and monitors the use of Protective Medical Devices and Medical Supports.
- Attends job related workshops, seminars, staff development and in-services as assigned or needed.
- Provides coverage as needed for other Lead Nurses at annual habilitation planning conferences and interims.
