Job Description

Head of Manufacturing Strategy and Operations, Foster City, CA

Gilead Sciences is currently seeking a Head of Manufacturing Strategy and Operations, who will design and develop an organization to centralize activities to support a complex network of 1,400 employees, at many locations across the globe, delivering medicines for Gilead's clinical and commercial portfolio. It is foreseen that this role will manage a team of 10-20 employees with 4-5 direct reports. This newly created function will provide oversight and direction for:

Hiring, mentoring, and developing team members within the organization. Sets performance goals and holds employees accountable for their performance. Leads the performance and talent management processes for their organization consistent with Gilead policies and practice.
Building and maintaining an organization culture consistent with the Gilead values and leadership commitments, with an added emphasis on quality and safety.
Developing a digital strategy for the Manufacturing organization in collaboration with the PDM and corporate teams having responsibilities for digital, Information Technology, Operations Technology, and data analytics.
Identifying and defining the implementation of a modern manufacturing management system for Gilead, (e.g. Lean Manufacturing) and co-ordination with similar efforts across PDM.
Defining the organizational and operational strategy for the Manufacturing organization. Must include defining the process for periodic review and leading the Manufacturing LT through that process. Define and deliver on the projects identified as part of the Manufacturing strategy. Lead the collaboration with PDM Network Strategy and Project Management teams.
Define and implement metrics to drive visibility to the operational performance of the Manufacturing network, definition and maintenance of resource models to support the sites, functions and PDM portfolio management, and leadership of the Operational and Capital budgeting process (including a multi-year view). Providing centralized resource management for Manufacturing resources defined in G.Plan (Planisware) to include updating templates, providing program specific resource models, creating portfolio-wide resource models, and scenarios for demand and supply planning.
The opportunity to design, build, and lead a high-performing organization to drive strategic initiatives and centralize activities in support of Manufacturing's global product, pipeline, and people goals.
The delivery of strategic innovation for global Manufacturing by creating a vibrant cross-functional ecosystem that supports agile empowered teams. Scanning the external environment to develop a roadmap to define where and when we invest.
Management of purchase orders, invoice reconciliation, procurement and planning processes and other logistics and business processes needed to support the interaction with contract manufacturing organizations.

In addition, the lead will serve as a strategic thought partner to the Manufacturing Leadership Team to help design and implement a Manufacturing innovation roadmap, that will include digital transformation, and collaboration with PDM specific initiatives to enable Gilead's 2030 ambitions. This leader will directly report to the SVP of Manufacturing and be a member of the Manufacturing Leadership Team. The ideal candidate will have broad experience in management in a GMP Manufacturing environment. The candidate will have a proven success record of working in a matrixed organization and regularly collaborating with cross-functional teams such as exist across PDM, and other functions in Gilead. In addition, the Head of Manufacturing Strategy and Operations will require excellent communication skills and will be comfortable interacting with internal and external teams of all levels, including Senior Management. This position will require the ability to design and optimize organizations and to understand and translate the business and strategic context within which we operate.

Knowledge, Experience, And Skills

Requires a Masters degree or Ph.D. with 16+ years of relevant professional experience, or BS with 16+ years of relevant professional experience - a degree in a relevant scientific or business discipline is strongly preferred.
Strong business acumen.
Excellent organizational and communication (both written and verbal) skills.

The Ideal Candidate Would Also Have

Experience with CMC requirements for drug development and manufacturing of a range of product modalities.
Comprehensive understanding of the biopharmaceutical industry, R&D, and product commercialization, including the regulatory framework, and of global biopharmaceutical manufacturing sector and trends in that sector.
Familiarity with FDA and ICH guidelines relating to registration, quality, and compliance concerning drug substance, drug product, and devices.
Experience in managing organizational cross-functional initiatives and/or business operations programs.
Strategic thinking and ability to influence and constructively challenge the status quo.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, to draw out diverse views, and to show tact and discretion in challenging situations.
Proven ability to effectively manage complex and ambiguous projects, influence stakeholders without authority, effectively network across the organization and communicate with senior leaders all within a fast moving, challenging and dynamic environment.
Experience defining the strategy and/or implementing a manufacturing management system.

The salary range for this position is: $281,010.00 - $363,660.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
