Job Requirements
Position Summary:
To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by overseeing all medication storage and preparation within the health system at Health First, Inc. The pharmacy manager ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services; meets all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements, and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards of Health First, Inc. The pharmacy manager develops and meets departmental goals that align with facility and organization goals.
Primary Accountabilities
Engagement:
- Work diligently to increasingly engage, provide tools of engagement, and raise issues of engagement with direct reports.
Quality/No Harm
- Ensures maintenance of an adequate medication supply and integrity of the medication supply.
- Establishes specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
- Ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients.
- Assures adequate control, procurement of and documentation of controlled substances.
- Ensures licensure is maintained in department files.
- Ensures compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
- Maintains current pharmacist and consultant licensure.
- Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation in inservices, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations.
- Maintains patient and department/hospital confidentiality
- Supervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility.
- Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required data.
- Assists VP of Pharmacy with the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.
- Develops, implements, and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.
Stewardship
- Develops and enforces policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate, and safe medication use.
- Assists VP with preparation of pharmacy budget annually.
- Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
- Assists VP with justification of all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
- Reviews and approves work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains appropriate staffing level.
- Prepares financial reports for administration in accordance with policy.
Customer Experience
- Supervises activities for the educational needs of health care professionals, patients and their families.
- Supervises all pharmacy personnel. Recruits, interviews, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staff.
- Assists in the development of job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
- Supervises and participates in the development and presentation of orientation, education, and training programs to the pharmacy, medical, nursing, and other staffs.
- Pharmacists who are certified to administer, per Florida law, may administer influenza, pneumonia, and/or varicella zoster vaccines to Health First associates and patients.
- Develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.
- Participates in all committee/functions required by the organization.
- Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with staff members and within the community.
- Attends management meetings and reads pertinent email communications on a daily basis.
- Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation in inservices, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations.
- Performs staff pharmacist duties when needed (not to exceed 10% of scheduled time).
Work Experience
Qualifications Required:
- Must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy.
- Must have a current Florida Pharmacist license.
- Must have a Florida Pharmacist Consultant License, or obtain within 6 months of hire.
- At least 5 years of pharmacy experience.
Qualifications Preferred
- Pharm D degree preferred.
- Hospital pharmacy experience preferred
- Some supervisory experience preferred.
Physical Demands
- Hours may be long and irregular; includes evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers. Good hand and wrist dexterity to enable typing and/or computer work for 8-10 hours/day.
- Good eyesight to read labels/prescriptions, graduated containers of fluids, to count tabs, capsules.
- Good hearing to understand phone instructions/orders, customers and those in which the position depends.
- Ability to work in noisy distracting atmosphere, to handle frequent interruptions, to adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
- Handle large volumes of work for long periods of time.
- Walk, bend, stoop, twist, sit and stand for long periods of time, 8-10 hours a day.
- May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs).
