Job Summary
This position is located in the Department of Health (DOH), HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Administration (HAHSTA). HAHSTA’s mission is to reduce HIV, STD, TB and hepatitis‐related morbidity and mortality and ensure healthy outcomes for persons living with those diseases. The position serves as Nurse Practitioner at DC Health and Wellness Center (DCHWC). DCHWC is the STD & TB clinic, which operates on a low or no‐fee basis and serves a diverse group of clients. DCHWC provides services aimed at prevention, treatment, and control of STDs and TB in the District of Columbia.
Duties And Responsibilities
The incumbent secures health and developmental history from the client, client family and/or parent; records findings and makes health critical evaluation. Performs or requests special screening and developmental and laboratory test and interprets the results. In addition, distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems. Evaluates total health care needs of clients and develops plans to meet these needs; makes decisions regarding preliminary/preventative nursing and medical care needs of patients; identifies and manages specific illnesses. Gives directs physiological nursing care in the presence of illness or disability in order to maintain life, provide comfort, reduce distress, and enhance coping ability. Provides surveillance of adherence to medical and nursing regiments to stabilize chronically ill persons; adjusts regimens within established protocols recognizing when to refer the patient to the physician or other health care team remembers. Provides full range of emergency services or crisis intervention in the absence of the physician, including lifesaving emergency procedures in order to stabilize a patient sufficiently to transport to a hospital and/or health care facility.
Evaluates the nursing and medical aspects of the Plan of Care (POC) and recognizes the need for reassessment by a physician; makes home visits when directed to implement a POC based on individual clients and/or family needs. Provides health care and preventive services to clients, families and/or significant others including guidance in nutrition, common illnesses, accidents, child rearing, and child growth and development. Participates with consulting physician in planning, instituting, evaluating, and revising program and/or treatment plan; assists in determining conditions, resource, and policies essential to delivery of health care services. Attends in-service and specific training, seminars, and workshops as identified by management and/or Federal grant requirements; keeps abreast of advancements in treatment and protocols, specifically those related to the area of assignment.
Qualifications And Education
Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (11) level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.
Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women’s Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.
Additionally, the candidate must have at least one year of specialized experience as a Nurse Practitioner working in either the private or public sector.
Preference for English and Spanish language fluency.
Licenses and Certifications
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination(external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Must have a license to practice as a NP in Washington, DC or be eligible for licensing in DC.
Working Conditions / Environment
The incumbent must be able to carry out official duties in a variety of settings and conditions. Routine work will occur primarily in an office setting.
