Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – Pre-Surgical Testing
Reports To: Clinical Manager / Administrator
Location: Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Position Summary
The LPN or RMA in Pre-Surgical Testing is responsible for preparing patients for their upcoming surgical procedure by performing clinical assessments, reviewing medical histories, verifying documentation, and ensuring all preoperative requirements are met. This role is critical to patient safety and surgical readiness, requiring attention to detail, clinical knowledge, and strong communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including health history review, medication reconciliation, and allergy verification.
Obtain and document vital signs, EKGs, lab work, and any required diagnostic testing.
Ensure all pre-operative labs, clearances, and consents are completed, accurate, and documented in the patient chart.
Communicate and coordinate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the clinical team regarding patient readiness or special considerations.
Provide patient education and instructions on pre-operative preparation, fasting, medication management, and what to expect on the day of surgery.
Identify and escalate any abnormal findings, incomplete records, or potential risks to the appropriate provider.
Maintain compliance with ASC policies, infection prevention standards, and all regulatory guidelines.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support smooth surgical scheduling through accurate and timely pre-op documentation.
Qualifications
Active LPN license OR certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Minimum 2 years of recent experience in pre-admission testing, perioperative services, physician office, or ambulatory surgery environment (required).
Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia considerations, and pre-operative requirements.
Excellent communication skills for interacting with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
Proficient in EMR documentation and comfortable with medical technology.
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and exercise sound judgment.
